On14th May 1944 Bristol suffered its last bombing raid of the war. 91 bombers attacked the harbour and airfields, using a 20 mile wide lane of Düppel (aluminium strips) between Portland and Bristol and a radar jamming system known as 'Kettenhund' (Watchdog). They dropped more than 163 tonnes of high explosive in the target area but only five bombs fell within the city boundary and fifteen Luftwaffe planes were lost.
Plans to launch V2 rocket bombs at Bristol from the Cherbourg peninsula were overturned by the landings and advance of the Allies in France.
