4th June 1944 – the US Fifth Army enter Rome following withdrawal from the city by German forces. In August 1943 the Italians had declared Rome as an ‘open city’ to protect its historic heritage. This meant that to avoid further bombardment and attack they would not defend it. The Vatican facilitated negotiations, persuading the occupying Germans, facing probable defeat here, to leave the capital without a fight. They were successfully able to withdraw their troops, the Allies having missed the opportunity to encircle and trap the retreating German forces in favour of taking Rome.
