On 8th August 1944 Eric Brewer wrote home that he was "still taking it easy in a kind of reserve. Reveille for us is 7:30 instead of about 5 o'clock...These last few days I have been doing cooking as we are a bit short of cooks, lucky me again. There’s the other lads playing cards, writing or listening to the wireless and poor me doing cooking, or trying to, but so far we haven’t had any serious complaints - only stomach aches, diarrhoea and two cases of fever*. Not too bad. I reckon they will live but if they will pick on the builders merchant for cook, what more can that expect? Lucky they have lasted so long eating some of the Brewer's special fish cakes."
*Maybe this was why Dick didn't cross out 'sick' on his Field Postcard?
Eric's diary reveals he was actually on "Recce near V Bocage – now standing to for orders." (Extracts from Eric Brewer’s diary and letters included by kind permission of Derek Brewer and his family.)
