WAR DIARY of 61 Recce Regt RAC October 1944
– Lt Col P.H.A. Brownrigg
Date 19th Place DRIEL
'The night has been uneventful. “C” Squadron moved their Command Post to the area of the sugar factory at 684746 under cover of darkness.
There has been little enemy activity during the morning though spasmodic mortaring and shelling has continued. This afternoon however the enemy has been more active and at 1405 hrs “C” Squadron located 2 mortars on the NORTH bank of the NEDER RIJN and several vehicles were observed in the same area 7077, and at 1412 hrs some cyclists carrying WT sets. Dusk brought the inevitable increase in enemy activity and our outposts again reported movement in area 7077. At 2130 hrs the US troops on our left reported an enemy patrol, approx 10 strong, had crossed the river and landed in area 6675, they were fired on and contact lost. At 2145 hrs “A” Squadron reported that they had located the patrol in the buildings at 675762 and they were heavily stonked. Nothing more was heard.'
