On 23rd October Eric writes: “Slack went away as he got hurt from last night’s do (see Eric’s diary for 22nd October) but I think he will be OK.” (From ‘Beaten Paths are Safest’ by Roy Howard, Brewin Books 2004)

‘Last night was again quiet and today nothing was heard until 1345 hrs when two spandaus opened fire from 704747 and 704755. They were engaged by our Mortars and silenced.
501* RCT (?) on our left sent a patrol across the NEDER RIJN tonight.’

‘The enemy’s policy is still to be low during the day and confine his activities to mortaring and shelling only. Today has been very quiet again though the inevitable movement started at last light.
At 1935 hrs an enemy patrol worked its way behind our outpost at 707764. It was then seen and engages by “B” Squadron assault troop with good results, and some hits were scored. They were driven back over the railway line taking their casualties with them.
Apart from Small Arms fire on the railway opposite 13 Troop and some good harassing fire on known enemy localities by 124 Forward Regiment the remainder of the night was peaceful.’
The action involving 'B' Squadron's Assault Troop (Eric Brewer's Troop) sounds remarkably like the event described by Eric in his diary for 22nd October.
