Chotie Darling,
Believe it or no, but I have another day free, so here goes again.
Hope you’re well, darling and settled down again after your short leave. I reckon I’ll take some time to get acclimatised when I get some leave again.
Diller was home for 24 hrs last week – much to mother’s surprise. It must be a wretched journey and the fare is 25 shillings, so she must think it worthwhile.
Glad to hear that Margaret* is bearing-up. Must be rather a strain for her with Ted over here. I still haven’t managed to contact him – the difficulty being that we’re with an Infantry Division and he’s with an Armoured Division. However, I keep trying – as Brinner does to contact me. He got within a few miles recently but had to return again in order to get back in time. The trouble is that we’re about 70 – 80 miles apart.
I’m not actually sure where he is, but have a pretty good idea. The snag, of course, is that he has to hitch-hike everywhere, as there’s precious little transport. Hitchhiking is fairly good but the days are so short now that you have to get a move on.
I’m very well installed in this house now – an amazingly clean place. They are so fastidious that it’s an unwritten rule that you change from outdoor shoes to slippers every time you go in the house! You know what I’m like, of course….I have at least three people following me around to clean-up things as I leave them.
No-one speaks any English (very rare, this) so I have to try to make my German understood which is a little tricky at times.
My other companions ‘Cuthbert’ and the ‘Duke’ have left for ‘l’échelon’ (“Base”, of the last war) to undergo further training with their respective troops.
I gave them some “compo” tea when I arrived here, which was a pretty sound idea as I now get cups brought in from time to time. ‘Compo’ tea is tea, dried milk and sugar all mixed together in powder-form and is really rather shocking stuff.
Must close here for more tea
Love Dicker
