Intelligence Section, July 1941 to April 1942
Fort Brockhurst, Gosport, Hampshire from July to September 1941 – Intelligence Section, HQ Company, the Dorset Regiment.
Branksome , Poole, Dorset from September 1941 to ?, possibly until April 1942 (no letters between 7th October 1941 and 22nd April 1942 so no given location although Dick attended the dentist in Bournemouth three times during this period) – Intelligence Section, HQ Company, the
Dorset Regiment.
Dick may have transferred from the Dorsets in autumn 1941 (see letters of 1st and 7th October 1941 and The Missing Winter).
12th July 1941 – The Intelligence Crew
This Intelligence game is proving to be a cinch, ---- all to do and plenty of time to do it in. It is in fact, just my vocation.
20th July 1941 – Horse Riding
They also had some superb horses … and thereby hangs a tale… I hit the ground on that part of my anatomy where it hurts most.
29th July 1941 – Dicker age 20
Apparently there's a minefield not far from here - and we're expected to go and disconnect the charges.
5th August 1941 – Ich liebe dich
At the moment I do six hours German and three hours Spanish per week ----. I won't be able to speak English soon.
11th August 1941 – German class
a lecture on mopping-up paratroops…bloody rubbish.They are under the impression that a section (9 men) could easily finish off 18 paratroops
17th August 1941 – Too many Court Martials
He‘s now at the Glasshouse at Aldershot. There's been a lot of Court Martials lately. Far too many for one Battalion.
6th September 1941 – Not much of a birthday
Poor Chotie ... I'm afraid it won't be much of a birthday for you, but doubtless better times are coming.
15th September 1941 – Autumn
I’m glad you’ve eventually joined up in the Land Army, as I think it will be a change for you.
19th September 1941 – To Branksome
We're moving to the Branksome Chine Area. Now don't get too excited - it won't be for long.
1st October 1941 – Chotie at Church Knowle
we are moving! It's more or less settled, (I know that look in Ma’s eyes...) and once again it's going to be Herne Bay.
7th October 1941 – Somewhere in England
I've managed to find Cocknowle on a map… I'll borrow a bike from Somewhere in England and be around about 3 pm to 5.30 pm.
